48 and I should have gone with this list to begin with... I think it's relatively fresh and modern compared to the Modern Library list. It's nice that graphic novels are included. (And that I get credit for INFINITE JEST. Not that I regret that anyway...)
I've read 38. I may be inclined to tackle the Time list, for the reasons that Ellen stated, and also because a lot of books on Time's list are on my shelf, waiting to be read. There aren't many books on the MLA list that aren't on the Time list that really get me excited about reading them. Also, the lack of any books published after 1981 is a big strike against the MLA list (I think Housekeeping is the most recent novel on that list). Both lists are great for cultural literacy, but Times' list really appeals to me.

I'm 17 for Time's list, but I must say that the presence of DELIVERANCE and of THINGS FALL APART on the list don't really encourage me to read more.

Love the post about how to carry a book, though. When I finally get around to Lolita, those tips may come in handy.
