According to the Guardian, bets placed on the list heavily favor Mantel; I know it's illegal, but I really wish America had more of a cultural-gambling culture.

I don't know about the East coast, but on the West coast there are tribal casinos everywhere and there is very much a gambling culture that goes with them. Maybe this is different from what you are talking about as I haven't read the book mentioned.
Sorry Moonaroo, I should have been more specific! What I meant was literary betting, specifically. It seems like you always read about Brits betting on things like which character is going to die in the next Harry Potter book or who will win the Nobel Prize. I've never heard of that going on in American casinos (and there's a big one where my parents live).
Granted, I'm not a casino-goer and the one time I went to Vegas, it was not to investigate the sports book for non-sport betting opportunities, so I could be missing something. I seem to also remember people in Britain betting on the American elections last year, which is more... ethically questionable. I don't think Byatt and Coetzee mind if someone makes money off them on the side.
