I hope you unwrapped a lot of good books today. You deserve it! And if I may? Thanks for reading, commenting and sending in recommendations this year. I always appreciate it, even when I forget to say so.

When I was little, I knew I was a bookworm but not what order to say it in.

I unwrapped exactly four new books today. I bought them for myself, wrapped them, and put them under the tree. They were a gift from my husband although he didn't know it. The best part of the gift was the two hours that I spent browsing in my favorite bookstore to find them. Happy Holidays.
I did not find any books under the tree this year. My parents did, though - I bought my father Nixonland, my mother Wolf Hall and the Balthazar Cook Book, and my uncle The Lost City of Z. I love the look on someone's face when they unwrap a book they were hoping to get or, even better, a book that they didn't ask for but which they know upon opening that they will love. It is a great feeling.
I didn't ask for any books, because I believed that my apartment was full of books I own but haven't read, and then I came home for Christmas and was reminded that my room in my parents' house is also full of books I haven't read. I read fifty books this year, which is a lot, but I found that I'm easily distracted by books that are recently released, or books that a friend or roommate is reading. In 2010, I am going to try to stick more closely to my 'reading list' because otherwise I'll never get around to The Satanic Verses and Operation Shylock and the rest of the Patrick O'Brian novels.
The book I got for Christmas was THE IMPROBABLE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. The first story I read was "Mrs Hudson's Case", by my favorite Holmes fan-fiction author, Laurie King, and the next was the truly magnificent "A Study in Emerald" by Neil Gaiman (think how much more I would have liked it if I had actually read any Lovecraft: add it to the list).
Then I started from the beginning. Stephen King's "The Doctor's Case" was pretty good, but the quality quickly deteriorated thereafter. I'm putting it away for a little while, in case I'm just Holmes-out.
