Man Booker Prize Shortlist Announced

Emma Donoghue, Tom McCarthy and Peter Carey are among the honorees for the Britlit award. (Though I hear Donoghue lives in Canada now and Carey here in New York, so what's that all about?) You have till October 12 to pick your winner; meanwhile, for any readers in the UK, there's a free iPod app with author interviews and excerpts.

I haven't even heard of any of those books.

I am so ashamed.

Well, ROOM and C only came out this week in the US, and the Jacobson is only available for Kindle for reasons I don't understand. You might like the fictionalized de Tocqueville trip of PARROTT AND OLIVIER, though.

Historically, the Man Booker has a much better track record of picking great books, instead of the hyped/politically correct books that often win the big literary prizes in the United States. Unfortunately this is not the first time that the Booker Prize nominees had only recently become available in the US at the time the nominations were announced, if they were available at all.

Canada's eligible, I think, though America isn't. I started the Carey, feeling all excited about it, and then the excitement got deflated somehow and I ended up leaving it in China. A pity.
