Book-Related Super Bowl Ads

As near as I could call it, there were two: First, this promo for a new video game dramatizing Dante's "Inferno":

You can actually hear him calling "Beatrice!" Detail, I always appreciate that. And... then there's this Bud Light spot about a man willing to crash a book club for a beer:

Finally, an ad to bridge the gap between beer ads and ads featuring clumsy, broad gender stereotyping. See man! Man no read! Lady books no matter to man! (Though to be fair it wasn't the worst in either category for the night.)

The book club advertisement didn't make any sense to me. At what percentage of women's book clubs is Bud Light served? What is the guy doing in the house in the first place? Is he somebody's husband? If so, why is he hitting on the other women? Is he a roommate? If so, why are they sharing a house instead of an apartment?

Even if you can get past the overt misogyny, the 'joke,' such as it is, only works if there's some explanation for why the guy was around the book club in the first place - and there isn't.

The house definitely looked too nice to be occupied by roommates. I thought one of the women was his wife, but I couldn't tell which one was glaring at him the most.

Judging by the other Bud Light spots, their advertising strategy was "Throw a lot of half-baked ideas at the audience so one of them will stick."
