Mystery author Mary Higgins Clark is leading the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York today, but she didn't make the list of my top 5 Irish writers:
5. Samuel Beckett
4. Edna O'Brien
3. W.B. Yeats
2. Oscar Wilde
1. James Joyce (well, obviously)
When I was little, I knew I was a bookworm but not what order to say it in.

One of my favorite lines from Tom Stoppard's "Travesties" (seen at the Court Theatre in Chicago) was "But you were right about Joyce. He was Irish."
I was therefore a little disturbed when I learned that that line wasn't in the play at all, and that I had apparently imagined it.
