Self-published author Sergio de la Pava ran away with a major prize from PEN America for his novel A NAKED SINGULARITY (now published by University of Chicago press). He joins fellow 2013 honorees Katharine Boo and Larry Kramer, among others.

Do books not exist until they're published by an established house? I suppose movies work the same way...foreign movies don't exist until they're released in the USA. Then they can start winning American awards, too.

Well...it's a gray area. I don't know how the awardees defined it, but most of the big self-published successes that migrated over to publishers had to migrate before they got to be considered. How the industry protects its own?
