You could apparently go nuts contemplating how much of Tolstoy is left on the page with each new translation that comes out, writes Masha Gessen for the New York Times.

I am waiting for your thoughts on the TOB long list, btw. :D

Does "Yikes, I haven't read ANY of these?!" count as a thought?

But I actually do have some thoughts and I will do so. I wish they'd just put out the short list sooner, but what can we do.

I wish they would put out the short list in time for Christmas wishlists, or that they would put out the long list in mid-nov to give us more time, but we are victims of the Rooster's whims. Have you really read none? I thought I was doing exceptionally bad by only reading 4.

I have read 7 -- 6 before the list came out, 1 since that I happened to have on hand. But I hesitate to tackle the list because it's just so long, and I don't have confidence of picking the right 16-18 books to make the next cut. (Although, I might as well try...)
