I prefer to live...dangerously :) I've never had a problem. A trick I use to add a little extra security is to fold up a small rectangle of cardboard and stick it under each "leg" of the bookcase in order to tip it ever-so-slightly back against the wall. It's just enough to tilt the cases in the right direction.
I've always been a fan of the Billy series of bookcases. I have five of them.
